The WSQ Basic Food Hygiene Course is a course accredited by the Singapore Food Agency ( SFA ). Participants will receive relevant knowledge and training on food safety and good hygiene practices. Upon completion of the course, participants will have the required competencies in the kitchen, hawker, food and beverage industries to meet the requirements of the Singapore Food Agency.
Under the SAFE Framework, all food handlers in non-retail food establishments must take and pass the WSQ Food Safety Level 1 course. Existing food handlers in non-retail food businesses can start taking the WSQ Food Safety Level 1 course now to meet the January 2023 requirement. Who should attend
Any employee who plans to work in the F&B industry while handling and preparing food and beverages in an SFA licensed food establishment, i.e. kitchen managers, supervisors, chefs, sous chefs, cooks, kitchen assistants, food stall assistants and all food and beverage handlers.
- Food handlers who prepare food and beverages in NEA-licensed food retail outlets and hawkers
- Anyone who needs a food hygiene certificate, food handler certificate or food safety certificate
Minimum entry requirements
- At least 16 years old
- Able to speak, listen, write and read basic English or Mandarin
- No work experience required
How long does a food hygiene course take?
The Food Hygiene course is a one-day course covering 7.5 hours (including assessment).
Assessment Method - Food Safety Course Level 1
At the end of the course, participants will be required to undergo a 1.5 hour assessment which will include a practical performance (PP), a written assessment consisting of multiple choice questions (MCQs) and short answer questions (SAQs).

Food Hygiene Certificate
Participants who meet all requirements will be awarded a Statement of Attainment (SOA) certification by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG).
